Self-Assessment deadlines and fines
When is the Self-Assessment deadline?
The deadline for filing your Self-Assessment tax return was January 31st 2025. If you still haven’t filed yours, then you’ve missed the deadline and have to pay HMRC penalties. Rest assured, this can happen to the best of us but the sooner you pay, the smaller the fine, so let's get you sorted.
How much will I be fined for late filing?
You’re automatically hit with a £100 fine from HMRC if your tax return is up to 3 months late. Then, if you file after this period the fine continues to increase, and you’ll be charged 7% interest on late payments. Here's a breakdown of the fines you’re facing:
- Over 3 months late: £10 per day, up to a maximum of £900
- Over 6 months late: Another £300 fine or an additional 5% of tax owed - whichever is higher – totalling £1300
- Over 12 months late: Another £300 fine or an additional 5% of tax owed - whichever is higher – totalling £1600.
Do I need to file a Self-Assessment?
Yes, anyone who is self-employed and earns over £1,000 in the same tax year has to file a Self-Assessment. It’s important to file on time and be accurate in your submission because this is how HMRC calculates and collects the income tax you owe.
Now I’m filing late, what do I need to provide?
You’ll need to share a breakdown of your income for the year, any supporting documentation, proof of ID and address. Going forward, it’s crucial to keep on top of your bank statements and receipts year-round to make filing easy, quick and accurate.
What happens if I've been paying too much tax?
This can happen – and if it does, you may be due a tax refund. Our tax specialists will help you to spot this and make HMRC aware.
Rest assured,
you're in good hands with Baa
